YYZ Oy Vey

If you ever want to feel bad about your musicianship, I suggest trying to play along with Geddy Lee on YYZ:

MAN am I out of shape!

Thanks to Computer Yid and Mike for putting this song in my head. Nu, when is the Rush Jam?

I'm a huge Rush fan. Saw them in concert at MSG in the summer. Have you ever seen the animated version?

I bet we'd have a lot of fun jamming.

Looks like this is from around the "Show of Hands" Tour.

If it makes you feel better, they've all gotten older too... (Lifeson no longer has that mane!)

Probably my mistake was that I started the practice with this song. I should have tried something easier like Free Will or Fly by Night. I loosened up by the time I got to the Joe Jackson stuff.

But it's humbling.

I love Rush. I always thought it was kind of neat how Geddy Lee got his name. When your mother is speaking broken English/Yiddish and when ypur name is Gary Lee Weintraub.nd when she says Gary Lee and it sounds like Geddy...Oh well you get the picture.

If I ever want to feel crappy about my drumming, I try anything by Rush. If I want to feel good? Some good old fashioned 4/4, some Tom Petty, ZZ Top, etc....

Some of my early bass playing was heavily influenced by Rush. Maybe because I play with a pick, my early sound was more guitar-like. I realize Geddy is a plucker, but he still has a very trebley sound.

If you want to hear how that translated into my take on Jewish Music, take a listen to Dovid Melech, a song we arranged for Kabbalah in 1986. This song never made it onto an album, and this recording from a rehearsal is the only version that exists.

Also listen closely to the bass line on Shoshanas Yaakov (live video here).

I'm guessing that Geddy would have a "rush" knowing that he's influenced a dr./yeshivish musician.

RUSH!!!!! I LOVE RUSH!!!!

Neil Peart is an uberdrummer. Look at that solo at the end. The drum sticks are blurred and he's hunched over them swinging them inches from his face, totally focused.

They're coming to LA in May!
