Victory is MINE!

For nigh on 6 days and nights did I do battle with a beast most foul which had invaded Mrs. Balabusta's computer. I still know not its true name. Yet ultimately was I victorious in my struggle, and Mrs. B's computer is now cleansed of the vile usurper which had so plagued me through this time.

You can read the gory details here.

I love those HijackThis! forums. They've helped me out of jams many times before.

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to help you out on the Internet, no? They are the Lomed-Vavniks of Cyberspace!

Yeah, it's amazing. I've used various forums a couple of times, although usually I can just read what they write for other people and apply them. It wasn't working this time so I had to post my own thread.

It kinda felt like I was at an "AA" meeting:

Hi, I'm Mark, and I have a computer virus.

I'm also VERY annoyed that after having spent a few hundred on Norton AV for my network, this thing just waltzed on to my computer and took up residence.

I can only imagine the conversation:

Norton: Halt! Who goes there?

Virus: Nobody.

Norton: (Squints through peephole) OK you're in.

This guy Howard, who helped me out, is in England. He must have been reading my posts at 3am over there.

Though I am slightly annoyed that he blew me off a few times on the Bbeeg.ini. I had to figure that one out for myself.

Hey! That's what I had last year... took me about 4 days to figure it out. VundoFix, thou art my savior!

Exceeeeept....that if you look at my vundofix log (it's on that thread) you'll see that I ran vundofix 2 times before and came up empty, but the third time he directed me to a newer version which worked. So it actually threw me OFF the trail for a while and made extra work for me.

Oy! Reading your thread over there almost gave me an anxiety attack. I'm with you - after spending so much $$ for Norton, we shouldn't have these issues. Glad you were able to get it all worked out though - we can add "computer genius" to your evergrowing CV now!

To be honest, curing a sick computer is not that much different than curing a sick person. The key is to listen to what your patient is telling you.

I wish that guy over there would have listened to me a little better, but I'm grateful for his help.

Of course, with people, you don't have the option of reformatting them when things get truly f*&^ed up.

Well, I only read Page 1 and some of 2. Sue me. But I have to disagree with you on one thing...

Heh. You just need to learn how... ;^{>
